Ntylan

Everyday Fine Dining

Fine dining meets comfort food in this affordable gastronomy joint – definitely the most exciting new arrival in Kypseli.

Tell Me More

Ntylan is the trendy new kid on the block, the block being the über-gentrified pedestrian street of Agias Zonis in the the über-gentrified neighbourhood of Kypseli. Named after Bob Dylan and Dylan Thomas (both favourites of the owner, Chef Vangelis Veis) this tiny restaurant instantly gained elite status. Relaxed in both atmosphere and attitude, it operates morning to night, offering coffee, drinks and a very interesting menu in between. There is an option to seat either outside or inside, with the latter significantly amplifying the experience. Reminiscent of a domestic kitchen island, the 10-seater bar counter is built around the working area and has a pleasantly informal, communal feel about it. The culinary ritual is -obviously- accompanied by music.

The Food

Chef Veis comes with serious gastronomic pedigree, having worked at Michelin-starred heavyweights such as Herve, Hytra and Soil. Informed by his background, he proposes a hybrid cuisine that blends fine dining with comfort food. The result is rather unique.

The menu is small and best enjoyed if shared. It was 4 of us so to make things easier, we ordered the entire catalogue, with a view to reorder if need be. The quantity turned out about right, we only had to repeat the bread (essential to scoop up leftover yummy sauces. It didn’t hurt that it was super tasty in itself). Dishes are between 8 – 15 euros, making it the most affordable possible version of a near fine dining experience. The wine list embraces the same philosophy: small, affordable, highly curated.

Here goes the full menu:
(dishes in order of appearance, as recommended by the chef)

Fish of the day
The Bread
and the bread’s friends!
Baked carrots (etc) salad
Sausage, potato & smoked tomato sauce
Celeriac, egg, mushrooms & cashew nuts
(same as above but ready to consume)
Fish stew
Lamb
Cheese cream & tangerine dessert

The Verdict

Exciting and unique in its category, Ntylan is a wonderful addition to the culinary map of Kypseli – I absolutely recommend it. Worth visiting to taste the full menu or for a glass of wine accompanied by a favourite dish or two. Make sure to reserve ahead since it is becoming popular very fast.
